The Real Car: Seven and Counting
The Mercedes-AMG F1 W11 EQ Performance was developed under technical director James Allison and powered by the Mercedes M11 EQ Performance 1.6-litre V6 turbo-hybrid. It is remembered for its innovative Dual Axis Steering (DAS) system, which let drivers adjust toe angle by pushing and pulling the steering wheel, and for the team's switch to a black livery in support of diversity and anti-racism.
In the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, the W11 won 13 of 17 races. Lewis Hamilton took 11 victories, passed Michael Schumacher's all-time record of 91 wins at the Portuguese Grand Prix, and clinched his seventh title in a wet Turkish Grand Prix — equalling Schumacher's championship record. Valtteri Bottas won twice, and Mercedes secured a seventh consecutive Constructors' title.
The Model: Spark 1:43
Spark has produced Mercedes F1 models in 1:43 over many seasons. Its W11 is offered in race-specific versions, of which the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix title-clincher and the Portuguese Grand Prix record-breaker are especially popular with Hamilton collectors. The sealed resin construction allows the matte black livery and fine sponsor detail to be reproduced crisply.
For a budget alternative, Bburago produced the W11 in its 1:43 Formula Racing line at an indicative £10–£25.
Why it ranks #05
- A historically significant season and a uniquely meaningful livery.
- Milestone race editions with clear collector appeal.
- Compact 1:43 scale fits alongside the Lotus 72D for a matched shelf.
What to Check Before Buying
Strengths
- Milestone-race versions
- Distinctive black livery
- Sharp resin detailing
Watch Out For
- Matte paint shows fingerprints
- Confusion with the similar W12 (2021)
- Fragile halo and bargeboards
- Verify the race on the base plate and box; milestone races command more interest.
- Distinguish W11 from W12 by the year and race printed on the packaging.
- Inspect the matte finish for shiny handling marks, which are difficult to remove.
- Check the acrylic case for cracks around the screw holes.
Value Considerations
The indicative range of £70–£110 applies to boxed race versions in excellent condition. Milestone editions may sit above this when supply is limited. Hamilton's long career and global following support steady interest in his title cars.
Indicative only: values depend on condition, production quantity, packaging and market demand, and should be verified before any transaction.
